Director of philanthropy
ASK seeks an experienced, full-time Director of Philanthropy to lead all philanthropic efforts and build upon a strong base of donors. This person will lead, design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive strategy to grow and cultivate major gifts support, expand the annual giving program and oversee the organization’s special events. This person will build and lead a statewide fundraising program to support ASK’s north star goal of raising the level of care for all children with cancer in Virginia.

The Director of Philanthropy is a senior-level position responsible for planning, managing and executing fundraising programs and the organization’s development strategy. This person reports to the Executive Director and works in collaboration with the Program Director, Board of Directors and Development Committee. This person will be a member of the organization’s leadership team. This position manages a team that includes the Associate Director of Development, Communications Manager, Development Operations Coordinator and Special Events Coordinator. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
Development:
  • Develop and implement overall annual fundraising plan, including goals, timelines, budget and identified audiences for proposals, appeals, and campaigns.
  • Manage fundraising activities and metrics to ensure that fundraising goals are being achieved and sources of support are diversified.
  • Build and manage a comprehensive donor stewardship program to strengthen and deepen relations between ASK and individual donors, corporate supporters, granting foundations and community funding partners.
  • Provide direction and supervision on all development operational processes, including database management, financial reports, donor lists, gift processing and acknowledgments, donor benefits and fulfillment activities.
  • Develop and manage a foundation grants strategy and process, from research and targeting of grant opportunities, drafting grant proposals in collaboration with key staff and Executive Director, managing submissions, follow up reports, to conducting planned outreach to deepen relationships with funders.
  • Supervise and mentor the development team to meet their individual goals in support of the team’s fundraising plan.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to increase support for ASK’s strategic priorities.

Events:
  • Provide leadership in providing strategy, planning, implementation and evaluation of ASK’s signature event, the ASK Above & Beyond Gala. Cultivate and retain sponsors, major donors and other key relationships that are critical to the event’s success.  
  • Support staff in reaching fundraising and strategic goals for 5K events, Ambassador Program and third-party fundraisers, including assistance with sponsor and vendor relationships, as well as event strategy.
  • Contribute to the creation of meaningful and impactful events that garner press and brand awareness, foster strong community relations, increase revenue, donor loyalty and acquire new supporters, including community partner fundraisers and third-party events.
  • Represent ASK at community events to expand the organization’s pool of supporters.

Communications:
  • Oversee the writing, production, design, and distribution of a wide variety of publications and collateral materials, including annual reports, brochures, marketing materials, fact sheets, one-pagers, slide decks, videos and other materials.
  • Oversee website updates with staff to ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly and ensure content is navigable.
  • Support the organization’s social media presence by coordinating content that will engage various stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Minimum five years in successful fundraising experience in non-profit.
  • Proven track record of securing gifts that align with donor interests and the organization’s priorities through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors.
  • Successful track record in special events fundraising. 
  • Proven track record in recruiting and retaining corporate sponsors, donors and partners. 
  • Experience leading and managing a team.
  • Experience working with volunteers and board of directors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Expertise in managing social media and other digital communications
  • Strong applied computer skills, with a solid understanding of donor database and fundraising systems (Bloomerang, qGiv, Network for Good)
  • Attention to detail and strong writing skills are essential.
  • Able to think strategically; a good problem solver with critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Enthusiastic support of ASK’s strategic vision, mission, and goals.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

This position is full-time position requiring some evening and weekend hours. This position will be based at the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation Family Center, located at 5211 W. Broad Street, Suite 100, Richmond, VA.

Bilingual Family Support Coordinator
ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation is seeking a full-time Bilingual Family Support Coordinator to help families navigate the pediatric cancer treatment process. The Family Support Coordinator is a non-hospital position and will supplement the support offered by ASK and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU clinic staff.

This position will provide organizational, emotional, and informational support to a family during the pediatric cancer treatment process to help them feel empowered to make decisions and maintain control over their treatment experience. The Family Support Program is focused on families who are beginning the process of pediatric cancer treatment.

Responsibilities:
The Bilingual Family Support Coordinator reports to the Program Manager and works closely with psychosocial team and clinic staff at the ASK Pediatric Oncology/Hematology Clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond.​
  • Provide regular (weekly) check ins with long term patients (bone marrow transplant) and their families and all families in the first six months of diagnosis (monthly) to support physical and emotional needs and make appropriate referrals.
  • Make weekly visits to the inpatient unit and outpatient clinic to meet & support families and build relationships with hospital staff.
  • Attend hospital volunteer training and abide by all in-patient hospital volunteer guidelines.
  • Document all interactions with families in the online client database so interactions can be reported to the care team in a timely manner.
  • Identify families who need additional support and make appropriate referrals. This may include but is not limited to:
  • Work with hospital care team to connect families with community supports (financial assistance, parent support group, sibling support, etc..) and assist a family in implementing needed services, and
  • Spend requested respite care time with the child in the hospital so that parents can have a break.
  • Maintain partnerships with community organizations and area businesses that can be enlisted to support families in various capacities.
  • Work with the psychosocial team to identify timely topics for families in treatment and implement strategies, including workshops and videos, to address topics of interest.
  • Facilitate monthly Spanish Parent Group.
  • Translate written family communications into Spanish

To be successful in this role, our Bilingual Family Support Coordinator will be:
  • Motivated to work in an emotionally challenging environment with demonstrated self care skills.
  • Organized, independent and self-disciplined.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; Collaborative and comfortable with families and staff of diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word; Excel; PowerPoint)
  • Preferred experience using an online email marketing platform such as Constant Contact.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.

Career Experience includes:
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) with experience working with the Latino immigrant community.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, counseling, human services, or a related field from an accredited institution; or relevant professional work experience.
  • Experience in the cancer treatment process highly favored but not necessary.
  • Working knowledge of public support services and local for-profit support resources.

This is a full-time (40 hour/week), salaried, in-person position. Salary range starting at $47,000. Position requires up to date flu and COVID-19 vaccination. Occasional evening and weekend work required.

Pediatric Cancer education support navigator
ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation is seeking four, full-time Pediatric Cancer Education Support Navigators, one for each of the following Virginia communities: Roanoke, Charlottesville, Norfolk, and Fairfax. This position will assess educational and developmental needs of children receiving treatment in the childhood cancer hematology/oncology clinic within each of the four locations listed above. This position will assist families in accessing appropriate accommodations and services in school or community agencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as a resource for and act as a liaison between the family, school division, and medical team.
  • Obtain necessary medical and educational releases and maintain documentation of all exchanges of information from parents/guardian, schools, and medical institutions. 
  • Review student educational records to assess current levels of academic functioning and evaluate need for further observations or assessments.
  • Review & assess students developmental and educational strengths, weaknesses, and challenges. Request assessments as needed.
  • Communicate results of educational assessments to parents/guardians and appropriate medical personnel.
  • Consult with parents to address educational concerns, offering guidance on appropriate next steps, available resources, and educational regulations and policies.
  • Accompany parent to school meeting to address late effects of treatment and the accommodations needed in the school setting. 
  • Discuss with school-based team the possibility of a 504 plan or IEP to address accommodations needed. 
  • Participate as member of clinic psycho-social team by providing educational updates.
  • Support ASK initiatives to provide social and educational programs to childhood cancer families within the treatment center and the community.

EDUCATION, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE:
  • Preferred Master of Education degree with emphasis in special education or equivalent work experience. 
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience.
  • Ability to build relationships across a diverse population. 
  • Ability to work independently while functioning within a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

This is a 40 hour/week position, in-person position. Salary range starts at $77,000 and is based on market value in each location. Position requires up to date flu and COVID-19 vaccination. Occasional evening and weekend work required.
