Director of Philanthropy Director of Finance and Operations Director of Philanthropy The ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Richmond, Virginia, and serves families across the Commonwealth of Virginia. They are a culture-first organization dedicated to making life better for children with cancer and their families. Since its founding in 1975, ASK (which stands for “Assistance, Support and Kindness”) has provided comprehensive support services that address the emotional, educational, financial, and social challenges that come with a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Each year, ASK serves more than 1,000 people, including children receiving treatment, survivors, and their families. The organization works closely with all five primary pediatric cancer treatment centers in Virginia. They are: Carillion Children’s, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Inova Schar Cancer Institute and UVA Children’s Hospital. The Director of Philanthropy is a senior-level position who will oversee the marketing team and will be responsible for planning, managing, and executing fundraising programs and the organization’s development strategy. This person reports to the Executive Director and works in collaboration with the Board of Directors and the Development Committee. This person serves as a member of the organization’s leadership group and manages a team that includes the Associate Director of Development, Associate Director of Marketing; Grants Manager; Marketing Content Manager, Special Events Coordinator; and Development Operations Coordinator. Responsibilities Include: Fundraising Strategy and Donor Relations Develop and implement overall annual fundraising plan, including goals, timelines, budget, and identified audiences for proposals, appeals, and campaigns. Manage fundraising activities and metrics to ensure that fundraising goals are achieved and sources of support are diversified. Build and manage a comprehensive donor stewardship program to strengthen and deepen relations between ASK and individual donors, corporate supporters, granting foundations, and community funding partners. Provide direction and supervision on all development operational processes, including database management, financial reports, donor lists, gift processing and acknowledgments, donor benefits, and fulfillment activities. Oversee the foundation grant program, including strategy and process, research and targeting of grant opportunities, and reviewing draft grant proposals in collaboration with key staff and the Executive Director. Supervise and mentor the development and marketing team to meet their individual goals in support of the team’s fundraising plan. Work collaboratively with staff to increase support for ASK’s strategic priorities. Events Provide leadership in providing strategy, planning, implementation and evaluation of ASK’s signature event, the ASK Above & Beyond Gala. Cultivate and retain sponsors, major donors and other key relationships that are critical to the event’s success. Support staff in reaching fundraising and strategic goals for 5K events, Ambassador Program and third-party fundraisers, including assistance with sponsor and vendor relationships, as well as event strategy. Contribute to the creation of meaningful and impactful events that garner press and brand awareness, foster strong community relations, increase revenue, donor loyalty and acquire new supporters, including community partner fundraisers and third-party events. Represent ASK at community events to expand the organization’s pool of supporters. Marketing Oversee the writing, production, design, and distribution of a wide variety of publications and collateral materials, including annual reports, brochures, marketing materials, fact sheets, one-pagers, slide decks, videos and other materials. Oversee website updates with staff to ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly and ensure content is navigable. Support the organization’s social media presence by coordinating content that will engage various stakeholders. Ideal Candidate: The successful candidate will be the right-hand person of the Executive Director, supporting the growth of the organization. Serving on the leadership team, the Director will be a mission-driven fundraising professional to lead and grow the individual major gifts and corporate giving programs. This strategic position is vital to diversifying ASK’s revenue streams beyond its current event-heavy model and sustaining long-term growth within the Richmond community and beyond. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of securing significant individual gifts and will bring a deep, personal connection to mission-based work, with demonstrated experience aligning fundraising efforts with impactful programming. The Director will be responsible for identifying and cultivating new donors, assessing and maximizing the capacity of ASK’s existing donor base, and personally soliciting and closing major gifts, particularly from individual donors. This role requires a relationship builder who will collaborate closely with program staff to understand ASK’s services and translate that impact into a compelling case for support. While continuing to support and elevate ASK’s signature Gala event, the Director will focus on expanding and diversifying revenue through new philanthropic partnerships and sustainable individual giving strategies. Qualifications: Minimum five years of successful fundraising experience in a non-profit. Proven track record of securing gifts that align with donor interests and the organization’s priorities through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors. Management of the marketing department to ensure the brand is consistent across the organization (i.e., website, social media, publications). Able to think strategically; a good problem solver with critical thinking and analytical skills. Successful track record in special events fundraising. Proven track record in recruiting and retaining corporate sponsors, donors, and partners. Experience leading and managing a team. Experience working with volunteers and the board of directors. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Information Technology Ensure effective management and support of internal information systems, including telephone system, telecom providers, computer hardware and software, and all network infrastructures. Facilities Provide oversight related to all facilities-related matters. Oversee occupancy issues, including maintenance, capital improvements, landlord relationships, ADA/accessibility, and other support as needed. Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate is a highly skilled and strategic finance professional who is also adept at broader operational management. They are a meticulous financial expert, responsible for maintaining the general ledger on a daily, accrual-based system. This individual is a strong communicator who can clearly and accurately present financial reports monthly to the Finance Committee and quarterly to the board. They are adept at managing the annual audit and budgeting processes and can effectively communicate critical financial matters to the leadership team and the Finance and Operations Committee. The ideal candidate also has experience with investment policies, cash flow management, and ensuring compliance with tax and regulatory requirements. They are a well-rounded professional with strong financial acumen and the ability to drive strategic and operational success across the entire organization. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field. Minimum 8 years related experience, CPA preferred. Non-profit GAAP accounting experience. Experience generating financial reports and the ability to analyze and interpret the data. COVID-19 Policy Background ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation (“ASK”) is committed to maintaining a workplace that is free of known hazards and to safeguarding the health of the patients and families whom it serves while providing critical in-person opportunities for community, connection and support. This policy is intended to comply fully with applicable state and federal laws and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and other health authorities. Public health measures and guidance related to the COVID-19 pandemic remain in flux, and ASK reserves the right to amend this policy from time to time to stay abreast of and consistent with such measures and guidance. Policy Subject to the remaining provisions of this policy: During periods when the CDC’s Community Level of COVID-19 is “high” : When ASK families are present, ASK employees and contractors will be masked when in any ASK facility unless (i) they are alone in an office, or (ii) they are in a public area and able to maintain six (6) feet of distance from other persons; Visitors to ASK facilities will be masked; Mask policy at indoor events will be determined in consultation with the venue and executive committee. Masks will be optional at outdoor events unless required by the venue; and Individual requests for exemption from mask requirements due to disability will be subject to review and accommodation consistent with state and federal law.   • Educational Support | ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation

    Enhance your child's education through ASK's comprehensive support services. From tutoring to graduation ceremonies, preschool through high school, we're here for every educational step. EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SUPPORT Cancer can greatly impact a child’s education at any age: from time out of school, a transition back to the classroom, or effects from treatment that make learning more challenging. ASK provides educational support from preschool through high school and the transition to adulthood. We are here to make sure your child has the extra help they need. Education Support Navigators In 2022, the state legislature allocated state funds specifically to support childhood cancer for the first time. These funds allow ASK to provide an Education Support Navigator at each pediatric cancer treatment center in Virginia. Our navigators help bridge the gap between the medical team and school team. They help patients and survivors stay on grade level, and receive the accommodations they need to be successful. Find My Navigator Education Support Navigators Back-to-School Supplies We passionately believe that every child deserves a strong start to the school year. We know that parents have a lot to juggle and the cost of school supplies adds up. We are happy to provide a backpack filled with school supplies to help start the school year off right. Back to school is a great time to check in with your Education Support Navigator to make sure your IEP or 504 plan is up to date. In-Person and Online Tutoring In-Person Tutoring In-person tutoring provides a certified teacher to help one-on-one with schoolwork. They’ll meet weekly with your child at a public space, like the library, to provide learning support in a way that your child will understand. In-person tutoring is currently only available in Richmond and Fredericksburg. Online Tutoring Online tutoring is a great option if your child has an IEP and needs some extra help with their schoolwork, but it needs to be in your home and on your schedule. ASK’s online tutoring program matches your child with a carefully chosen academic mentor from our partner, The Brain Bodega, to help with schoolwork and other study skills. They’ll meet online with your child up to twice a week to provide school support in a way that works for your child. If your child receives treatment in Virginia, contact the Education Support Navigator at your hospital or clinic for more information. Tutoring First STEP Preschool The First STEP (Socialization Through Enriched Play) preschool class is a special class at First Baptist Preschool just for our ASK families. Our teachers look for both typical developmental milestones as well as late effects from treatment to help our kids get the best start possible. We take extra cleaning precautions to keep our kids healthy and safe. Our focus is to prepare students for a successful kindergarten experience with skills like sharing, listening, focusing, and cooperating. First STEP Preschool Graduation Ceremony Graduating from high school is no small achievement, and we proudly honor our graduates each spring in an ASK graduation ceremony. Whether your ASK kid went through treatment when they were ten years old or are going through treatment during their senior year of high school, we want to celebrate them. Family, friends, educators, and healthcare providers come together to celebrate this important milestone. ASK Graduation Young Adult Support It’s not unusual for teens and young adults who have been through childhood cancer to feel different from other kids their age. Their experience may have changed them emotionally, academically, and socially. They might not take the typical path of graduating from high school, going to college, and finding a career. Sometimes it’s easier for another adult to ask the questions that help guide them forward into adulthood. YOUNG ADULT SUPPORT SUPPORT Childhood cancer can affect you for a lifetime: physically, emotionally, cognitively, and financially, to name a few. But your diagnosis and late effects from treatment do not define you, or your future. ASK is here to provide young adult cancer survivors (known as YACS) with the resources, guidance and community they need to thrive as they enter adulthood. New to ASK? We connect young adults with support services and community resources like driving schools and wellness organizations to learn how to drive and how to stay physically active and healthy as you get older. College Readiness ASK helps college-bound young adults prepare for school with a free SAT prep bootcamp, arranging college tours, assisting with applications, and offering tuition assistance. We help ensure accommodations are in place, send care packages and touch base r egularly to make students have everything they need. Job/Career Training Ready to enter the work force? ASK helps to connect young adults with technical programs, vocational schools and workshops to grow job readiness skills. We also assist with resume writing, job searching for both full time and part time positions that will best meet your interests and skills. Social Events ASK invites our YACS to regularly scheduled social events like private art classes, casino nights and offsite retreats to build friendships in a judgement-free zone with other young adult cancer survivors who are walking on the same journey. Young Adult Support Coordinator Get In Touch Meet Michelle Michelle Jarnagin-Johnson, ASK's Young Adult Support Coordinator, has worked in the education system for decades. Throughout her career, Michelle has worked in many different education-related roles, from public school systems to the VCU Health System, focused on supporting and advocating for children with learning challenges to ensure their success. In 2019, Michelle joined the ASK team to bring her expertise to our young adult support program (previously called "The Launch Project") and has since worked with countless older teens and young adults to help them feel confident and prepared as they enter the next exciting phases of their lives. No matter where you are in your journey and what your goals are, Michelle is here to help with whatever you might need to achieve them! Common Questions How young/old do I have to be to receive Young Adult Support from ASK and participate? ASK kids who are registered in our system will automatically be eligible for young adult support once they turn 18. There is NO upper age limit for participation. FBLA students have set a goal or raising $7,500, which could give our middle and high school students a retreat to grow academically and socially twice a year.     Celebrate the strength and resilience of our ASK Kourageous Kids through their inspiring stories and captivating family portraits! Join us in spreading awareness and support for brave young patients and survivors of childhood cancer and sickle cell disease. ASK KOURAGEOUS KIDS KIDS A cornerstone of ASK since 2001, the Kourageous Kids campaign was created in honor of September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This special, month-long tribute started as a traveling exhibit, to share inspiring quotes and beautiful portraits of courageous childhood cancer patients and survivors in our community. Now, more than two decades later, we're proud to say we’ve continued this important legacy with our ASK kids and families every year since! Each year, we invite parents to share their child’s unique story and personality through professionally captured portraits, along with an in-depth interview to talk about their diagnosis and treatment journey. Kourageous Kids portraits are also displayed around town to help spread awareness during September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Photos and stories are then shared digitally throughout the year. It's our great honor to share these important stories, and the incredible strength of our ASK families, with the world. With their help, we can advocate for more support for patients and survivors just like them all across Virginia!
